January Practicum: Chicago Beyond the Skyline

In our January Practicum, you’ll spend three exciting weeks exploring and learning about the Chicago few tourists ever see, while also volunteering in a three-day-a-week placement. You’ll gain significant work experience in an organization, business or agency appropriate for your major or interest area. The practicum combines a seminar which focuses on Chicago’s diverse neighborhoods, institutions and populations with the opportunity to develop your career interests.

Placement

Before you arrive, Chicago Center staff work very hard to secure a personalized placement that fits the interest areas and major’s requirements that you have outlined in your application. Our goal is to place you in a stimulating work environment that will give you a taste of the career you are interested in, while exposing you to a diverse client base or work environment. As the nation’s second largest job market and a global community, Chicago is the perfect opportunity to test out your own professional and personal development. The placement practicum is seven days total, integrated with a seminar schedule designed to get you out into the city to meet a diversity of community resources and learn how Chicago is meeting big city challenges.

Seminar

The Chicago Beyond the Skyline Seminar will introduce you to the ethnic, religious, gender and economic diversity of Chicago’s populations. You will visit Chicago’s legendary neighborhoods, be introduced to major political and economic institutions, and meet with community, religious and artistic leaders. You will study how issues such as youth violence and immigration impact the city and examine ways in which Chicago is meeting these challenges. The role of artistic expression to the cultural and social dynamics of the city is also emphasized. You’ll get to know the broad range of art forms thriving in Chicago, including blues and jazz, museums, poetry, off-Loop art galleries, dance, film and theater.

Requirements

The requirements of the January Practicum include seven days in the placement, participation in scheduled seminar activities and discussions, a daily reflection journal, text responses, a group project, and reading the daily newspaper.

School Observation credit: The January Term can be tailored to meet your School Observation Requirements. Most campuses simply require that your seven day placement practicum locate you in a Chicago Public School. Contact your campus liaison for more information.

Credit

Most students receive 4 credit hours from their campus for the January Term. Typical courses students receive credit for include “Race and Ethnic Relations,” “Cultural Diversity,” or perhaps practicum credits, depending on your major. Check with your campus liaison.
