Frequently asked questions

How do I get an internship?

Semester: You will work with a member of the staff to determine your specific interests and requirements for your placement. Once you arrive in Chicago, you will receive a list of sites that best fit those requirements and you will go out and interview at the placements. All students are guaranteed a placement. For those students that wish to have their internship set up in advance of the term, please submit your complete application at least 2 months prior to the term you are applying for. Summer: Because our summer is a shorter term, we want to ensure you maximize the amount of time spent at your placement. You will still work with a member of staff, but will instead be placed at the internship site prior to your arrival in Chicago.

Are internships paid?

No. Internships are not paid. In the past, students have been able to fit part-time work into their schedules. Please contact a member of the staff to discuss your financial needs.

Do you work with students in my specific major?

We work with students in all majors. No matter your interests, we will help you find the perfect internship to fit your interests and begin your professional career.

I don’t see my college listed on your website. Can I still participate in the program?

Yes! A member of our staff will help you register as a Guest Student at Millikin University, our matriculating college.

What is the cost of the program?

Semester: matriculating college tuition + $5800 residency fee + $300 city activity expense Summer: $5900 (includes tuition and residency fee) + $200 city activity expense We encourage all students to meet with your Financial Aid Office on campus to discuss specific figures based on your financial package. Begin by filling out our online application and paying the application fee. A member of our staff will follow up with you to let you know what the next steps are.

Do you have deadlines for the application?

We do not have deadlines for our application. However, you should check with your Off-Campus Study department on campus to see if there are any deadlines or applications you have to follow that are campus specific.

Where will I be living?

All of our students live together in a three-flat apartment building in Hyde Park. To learn more about the neighborhood and your accommodations, check out our City Living page.

Should I bring my car?

We strongly discourage students from bringing their cars. All of our students learn how to use public transportation through an extensive workshop during the first week of the program. Additionally, parking in the city can be difficult and sometimes expensive.

I’m from Chicago. Can I live at home and participate in the program?

All of our students are required to live in our student housing facility as it is an important part of the program. We’ve worked with Chicago natives in the past who reflect that they were happy they decided to live with other students in the program. If you feel your situation is unique, please submit your petition to live off-site as part of your application. Requests will be considered on a case by case basis.
